The US Dept. of Agriculture’s (USDA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs award grants to technology and science-based startups to support high-quality research related solving problems in agriculture and rural communities. The program’s goal is to stimulate technological innovation and increase private sector commercialization of innovations derived from USDA-supported research. USDA SBIR/STTR programs are administered exclusively by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).
SBIR/STTR Phase IGrants awarded are up to $175,000, depending on the topic area. Project duration is 8 months for SBIR and 12 months for STTR. Phase I applicants are eligible to receive up to $6,500 in additional funds to receive programmatic support on commercialization research (TABA).
SBIR/STTR Phase IIGrants are limited to $600,000 and duration is 24 months. Phase II awards are only open to previous Phase I awardees. Phase II applicants are eligible to receive up to $50,000 in additional funds to receive programmatic support on commercialization research (TABA).
Direct-to-Phase II/Fast-Track mechanisms are not available under the USDA SBIR/STTR program.
