The US Department of Education (ED) and Institute of Education Sciences’ (IES) SBIR program provides non-dilutive seed funding to startups to create innovative education technology products to transform education and special education. ED/IES SBIR-supported awardees have commercialized emerging and innovative forms of learning and instructional technologies to classrooms, such as games, assessments, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), 3D-printing, simulations, virtual worlds, AI adaptive tutors, data dashboards, and assistive technologies. Many ED/IES SBIR-supported products have won national industry awards for technological innovation in education.
Phase 1A is a request for proposals for $250,000 awards for 8-months for the research and development (R&D) and evaluation of prototypes of entirely new education technology products where no or limited previous technological development has occurred. The goal of the Phase IA track is to stimulate novel approaches to solve pressing problems in education
Phase 1B is a request for proposals for $250,000 awards for 8-months for R&D and evaluation of prototypes of a new component to be added to an existing education technology prototype or product. The goal of the Phase IB track is to strengthen existing research-based prototypes or products in addressing pressing problems in education.
Phase 2 is to continue the R&D effort initiated in Phase I, with awards for 2 years for $1,000,000. A funded Phase II ED/IES SBIR project would be successful if at the end of a 2-year period the team have fully developed a commercially viable education technology product, demonstrated the usability, feasibility, and fidelity of implementation, evaluated the its promise, developed a commercialization plan, and developed plans for ongoing improvements.
Phase 3 is for the private sector commercialization of education technology products that were developed and evaluated with awards from the ED/IES SBIR program. ED/IES SBIR does not provide funding during Phase III, it is the responsibility of the small business to commercialize the products developed with government funding.
