Funding Opportunities

Phase I feasibility studies or theoretical research or R/R&D efforts on research topics offers startups up to to $200,000 of funding over 6 months, depending on the scientific and technical merit of the offer, its commercial potential, and its relevance to U.S. DOT requirements and current research priorities. At the successful completion of the Phase 1 period, the company is eligible to proceed with Phase II proposal evaluation.

Phase II is to continue the R/R&D effort from the completed Phase I , with awards for 2 years for up to $1,500,000. Phase II are chosen as a result of competitive evaluations and are based on the results of Phase I, the scientific and technical merit of the Phase II proposal, and the commercial potential of the proposed Phase II project.

Post Phase II if invited by the Government, a Phase II awardee may receive one additional, sequential Phase II award to continue the work of an initial Phase II award.

Phase III is oriented towards commercialization of SBIR research or technology and may be for products, production, services, R/R&D, or a combination thereof. Phase III is funded by sources other than the set-aside funds dedicated to the SBIR Program.
